JAYAM RAVI'S VIEWS ABOUT ACTRESS THAMANA AND THILLANGADI

There is a lot of talk about Thamanna’s Thillangadi. It seems she looks very glamorous in this film. When asked Jayam Ravi about this, he laughed. Further while speaking about this film, he said,” This will be the first high budgeted film of our company.

Because lot of actors is acting, the expenses have been increased. You can laugh at each scene. Vadivelu, Santhanam, Ganja Karuppu and Sathyan are doing comedy with me. Many are asking me whether there was ego problem among them. Ego is not a negative matter. When we think our role should come well, that itself is ego.

But this is strength to a film and not weakness. Both Santhanam and Vadivelu have really rocked in the comedy scenes. If you see the film, you can come to know that how genius is Vadivelu. Santhanam is for the first time donning a role that nobody has donned so far.

Thamanna has become very close to us. She invited the whole Thillalangadi team for lunch at her house in Mumbai. Thamanna has for the first time had acted in glamorously in this film. Most of the audience would be stunned by her looks.

After the shooting was completed the whole team presented her a cake and bouquet. During this send off, she had tears in her eyes. After doing this comedy film, I am acting in a serious role in Ameer’s Aadhi Bhaghavan. You will see Ameer through me.

Ayyanaar Music Review

Written and directed by SS Rajamitran and produced by PL Thenappan ‘Ayyanaar’ is a love story with family sentiments. Aadhi of ‘Mirugam and Eeram’ and Meera Nandan of ‘Vaalmiki’ are the lead characters in this film. Santhanam is the comedian.

Meera is a college student who is into volleyball and Aadhi plays the coach. Meera meets the coach by accident and initially develops a bad impression of him and suspects his intentions. At the end it’s all rosy.

Music is by the young talented S.Thaman who is having a good run these days. The audio of ‘Ayyanaar’ was released on June 14 by Bharathiraja and others at Sathyam Cinemas.

1. Kuthu Kuthu

Singers: Velmurugan, Bruce Lee, Aalaap Raju

Lyricist: Na. Muthukumar

A brave ‘dapang kuthu’ with a social look at death and how the world is after that. Rhythm is fast and peppy but not pulsating enough. Na. Muthukumar’s take on the world after death is thought provoking. Vocals are indigenous.

2. Paniye Paniye

Singers: Ranjith, Priyadharshini

Lyricist: Thamarai

This trance feel duet racier than thought. “Paniye Paniye” must be appreciated for its impeccable arrangement more than anything else. If the singers are melodious the instrumentation is more melodious with the words of Thamarai. Good pace variation in the running is a revelation from Thaman. Violins and guitar gives a damn dreamy feel. Real good. Pick of the pack.

3. Pachai Kili

Singer: Rahul Nambiar

Lyricist: Vivega

Can’t figure out the genre. A plain family love song at times strays out often to be mundane with chorus. Clichéd lyric has tied the hands of music director. Rahul Nambiar only shows some enthusiasm in this song.

4. Aathadi Aathadi

Singer: Naveen

Lyricist: Na. Muthukumar

This is a love melody with good pattern rhythms. Naveen has done a commendable job infusing life into the temperamental number. More than a useful number for the film we think. A painful heart speaks well in the words of Na. Muthukumar.

5. Ayyanar Theme

Instrumental As the title of the film suggests this theme music is a vigorous mix of village drums and soft strings. Accompanying chorus rendition is scary matching the title of the film. OK.

All the songs of ‘Ayyanar’ keep the spirit of the film. The songs are not entirely folksy as the title of the film would suggest. Thaman has experimented with some western tint added to folk which is nice to feel for the first time.

ACTOR BHARATH IS HAPPY WITH RAJINI AND KAMAL

Bharath recently had an opportunity to meet both Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth at a function. Taking the chance of meeting both the stalwarts of Tamil cinema together, Bharath expressed his desire to have him photographed with them. Obliging as ever, Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth assented to it immediately.

When asked about his interaction with the stars, Bharath said that the Superstar was very appreciative of his films and lauded him. To Kamal, Bharath put forth a request to act with him in one of his films. The Ulaga Nayagan is reported to have told him that they would act together if a good opportunity came by.

ACTRESS SNEHAS VIEWS ABOUT POLITICS

The Telugu film Vijayanthi IPS which had Vijayashanthi in the lead role is being remade in Tamil with the title Bhavani IPS. G Kiccha is producing and directing this film. Sneha is donning the role which Vijayashanthi did in Telugu.

Sneha is donning the role of a police officer. She while speaking to the media said,” Director Kiccha approached me and asked me to do the action role in Bhavani. I had a doubt whether I will be able to do the action role since I was donning homely roles so far.

But Kiccha said it was possible for me to do the role. After seeing my photos in police uniforms I was little confident that I can do the role. But the training given by Thalapathy Dinesh’s son made me involve very much in the film.

The police personnel have been shown good as well bad in cinema. In the recently released film Singam, they have shown Surya as a talented police officer. Tamil Nadu Police are talented people and women police are also doing exceeding well.

Many are asking me whether I will act in action films alone. I will act in both the type of films. There are some people who ask me whether I will come into politics. At any point of time I will never come into politics.

RAAVANAN MOVIE REVIEW 18-06-2010

RAAVANAN MOVIE REVIEW

Starring: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Priyamani, Prithviraj, Prabhu, Karthik, Munna, Ranjitha.
Direction: Mani Ratnam
Music: A R Rahman
Production: Madras Talkies

Let’s get this straight. Raavanan is not Mani Ratnam’s attempt to venerate the epic villain whose name the movie is titled after. It’s not also a study on complex human relationships weighed down by trust, conviction or quandary. It’s a pure cinematic retreat spanning across the dense jungles of Southern and Central India with exceptional cinematography (Santosh Sivan and Manikandan), by-now cult songs (A R Rahman) and interesting performances by its lead actors. And the significance of the movie appears in the same order mentioned above.

Mani’s conviction of illustrating an unachievable love story between the two leads (Aishwarya Rai and Vikram) is palpable from the very start of the movie. However, the blossoming of love doesn’t quite form the back bone of Raavanan so much. The movie digresses into other aspects - a man hunt, flash backs, revenge drama and so on and so forth. The man hunts lack dexterity, the revenge drama that is triggered by the death of Vikram’s sister seems engineered and Prithviraj often comes across as stiff – showing unnecessary tautness in the character that is probably designed to defy emotions (may be because he is in his Khakis?).

But all that is absolved, as the movie stunningly unfolds often drenching itself in the monsoonal deluge making you feel rain-soaked. If you have any doubt about Mani’s eternal love affair with rain, Raavanan stands as a remarkable testimony. It rains in the song sequences, in encounters and in emotional scenes. And at other instances, the sky is constantly downcast as if threatening to pour down. And the cinematography captures it all in delightful exuberance.

For the most part, Vikram owns the movie seizing it magnificently even from Mani’s own hands. His love blooms out of astonishment at the outwardly courage displayed by Aishwarya Rai and he makes those scenes persuasive for the viewer. He infuses life into the character and shows no jaggedness, falling for a married woman thus replicating, probably the characters of Raavanan. Suhasini’s profound dialogues come in handy in many places and the viewer is made to read between lines quite often.

Aishwarya Rai’s semblance of the late Padmini is unmistakable, it could be her dialogues or the way she manages her composure attentively even in the hardest of terrains the character puts her through. The lady sure has attempted to reach on par with Vikram in performance in many sequences. Kudos to Mani for a dignified portrayal of his lead woman. There is a refreshing strength in Ragini’s character brought out well by Aishwarya.

Prithvi plays a toughie police officer and somehow his character portrayal leaves a few questions unanswered: for instance, his love for Aishwarya Rai is weighed down by his commitment and that singular fact does not come across convincingly.

Priyamani plays the ill-fated Vennila and leaves a lump in your throat. Karthik in his second innings steals the show. Prabhu and Munna play support roles that ebb and flow with the movie.

Cinematography by Santosh Sivan is brilliant and has rendered the perfect support for Mani. His probing lens takes the audience through the thick jungles, the mighty waterfalls and the rough terrains of India. Music and art direction play equally momentous role in Raavanan as its lead actors. If not for Rahman’s songs and background score, Vikram’s unrequited love wouldn’t have been so painful for us. The songs have already been much debated about and leave no scope for further discussion. One word though: it’s not for nothing “Usure Pogude…” has achieved a cult status. You tend to try hard not to fall in love but fail with the song as Vikram heaves a sigh of relief, having seen Aishwarya Rai breathing and alive after a steep fall.

Sameer Chanda’s art direction complements the ruggedness and splendid beauty of the nature in the jungles so well you refuse to believe anything is man-made.

A major drawback is the lack of ‘Tamil’ feel in the film and its music; it more appears for the audience north of Vindhyas in many places. What Mani loses out is the pace over the later part of the first half; he gains it back with a major twist in the climax. Although you have a few questions about the incidents leading to the finale, those are done away with - thanks to the elegiac climax.

TOP 10 REASONS TO WATCH THE FILM RAVANAN

1. For Mani Ratnam fans, this one is reason enough, but for you sceptics out there, here are nine more!

2. If you thought Iruvar, Roja and Bombay were Mani Ratnam's best, Raavan/ Raavanan is going to stun you! Says who? Just about everybody who has worked for the project! “Mani Ratnam has made this film like a penance. Mani Ratnam, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai will definitely get National Awards,” said lyricist Vairamuthu.

3. Mani Ratnam's Raavanan is also special for its huge star cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj, Karthik, Prabhu, Priyamani, Munna, John Vijay in Tamil and Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Govinda, Ravikissen, Priyamani, Nikhil Dwivedi in Hindi (Raavan).

4. Most parts of the movie were shot in deep interiors of dense forests. Our hero plays a tribal chief!

5. Shyam Kaushal has choreographed the thrilling climax fight. “The shooting for Raavan began in January 2009 in Kolkata, then Ooty, and the climax was shot on Malsej Ghat, where there’s a scene on bridges 2,000 feet above mountains. Mani loves challenges and likes challenging his actors and technicians too. His quest for perfection puts them through a grueling routine,” he said.

6. For the first time, Vikram simultaneously plays two diametrically different roles in two languages of the same film. Vikram play the role of Dev (Ram) in Hindi and Beera (Raavan) in Tamil.

7. Aishwarya plays the role of Ragini, a spunky classical dance teacher. The first look of the movie shows her dancing gracefully in a song.

8. Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai will dub in her own voice for the Tamil version while Vikram is all set to speak Hindi in Raavan.

9. Another highlight is Prabhu and Karthi, co-stars in the blockbuster Mani Ratnam movie Agni Natchathiram, they team up again for the same director after a long gap.

10. A.R. Rahman's chart-busters, Vairamuthu's adorable lyrics, Santhosh Sivan's marvellous camera work and to top of all, 'The Mani Ratnam factor'. Well Raavanan is definitely one of the most-anticipated films of the year. So get ready for some action this Friday (June 18, 2010)

SOMETHING ABOUT THE FILM RAAVANAN 2010

Starring: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Priyamani, Prithviraj, Prabhu, Karthik.
Direction: Mani Ratnam
Music: A R Rahman
Production: Madras Talkies

The biggest Friday of the year thus far is here. After more than 6 years, Mani Ratnam is finally ready to release a film in Tamil. The last time we saw a Mani Ratnam Tamil film on screen was in 2004, Ayudha Ezhuthu. Though 2007 had Guru which was nothing short of a masterpiece and also had a dubbed Tamil version, it basically was a Hindi movie. But, now we will have our wish; the release that we have been waiting for all these years; Raavanan.

Well, there is nothing left to say about this movie that most of you would not know. Ever since it was first announced, it has been one of the most eagerly followed processes. Every bit of news about Raavanan and its making has found its way into the media and that leaves very few surprises to unravel in the form of a preview. However, in spite of all the hype and media coverage associated with the movie, there is still mystery that shrouds the actual theme of Raavanan and there is intense anticipation regarding this aspect.

How will Mani Ratnam interpret the Ramayana? Or, is it an interpretation of the Ramayana at all? Have we been guessing too many things just because of the title of the film? Well, that is unlikely because we have got quite a few clues regarding Raavanan’s link to the great Indian epic. The trailers have very clearly shown that Aishwarya Rai being held a captive in what seems to be forest like environs. And, the natural extension of this would be the rescue mission being carried out by Aishwarya Rai’s husband to retrieve her from captivity. The captor is Raavanan, the captive is Sita and the man out to rescue the captive is Rama. Pretty simple; one would think. But, Mani Ratnam is not the one to go along such obviously expected lines and that is where all the anticipation about Raavanan’s take on the Ramayana arises.

Almost everyone knows that there are conflicting interpretations of the Ramayana and the mindset of the characters involved in it. Perhaps the most diversely sketched character across mythology is Raavanan himself. Some detest him as the evil asura lord who misused all his powers to wreak havoc in all the three worlds and then schemed in a wicked way to kidnap Sita, not showing the guts to face Rama one to one in a duel. Some versions, however, present him as the learned, devout Brahmin who managed the almost impossible feat of gaining the amnesty of Lord Shiva after infuriating him. He is also shown as an able ruler and invincible warrior who created the great city of Lanka and there are also views which justify his kidnapping Sita, saying that he was avenging the insult that his sister Surpanaka was subjected to at the hands of Rama.

There are also versions which go to the extent of saying that all that Raavanan did was towards his ultimate aim of getting slain by Rama who was none other than Lord Vishnu himself and thus gain eternal salvation.

Which Raavana will Mani Ratnam present before us on screen? Well, there have been reports that this Raavana is one who earns the wrath of the system by standing up for the oppressed and the minorities. But, we don’t know anything for sure.

If Raavanan is providing a huge opportunity to anyone, then it has to be Vikram. Well, any actor will benefit hugely from a Mani Ratnam film. But, Vikram has got an extra special opportunity this time; something that no actor in world cinema has got to do - playing protagonist and antagonist (if there is a clear-cut distinction) of the same story in different versions. As Raavanan in Tamil and as Rama in Hindi; this is one movie that will prove Vikram’s versatility beyond doubt. One can says for sure that his fame is sure to spread much farther with Raavanan. Aishwarya Rai seems to be a blessed actress; very few get three Mani Ratnam films in their career, this lady has. It will be enchanting to see the ‘most beautiful lady of India’ (supposedly) play the highly revered Sita. Priyamani gets a huge opportunity, so do Prithviraj and Munna. And, there will be a whole lot of highly respected faces like Karthik and Prabhu.

Raavanan can be said to be a film that stands on a tripod. The tripod consists of Mani Ratnam, Santhosh Sivan and A.R. Rahman. Nothing needs to be said about the excellence that these technicians bring. We already know about the music; the magic of the camera will soon be evident.

As a film; according to reports, Raavanan was among the toughest to have been shot. The most demanding terrains, the most inclement weather, the most unfortunate interferences, delays etc. created a lot of doubts over Raavanan. But, the team has braved all this and come out proud and all of them seem genuinely confident that they are part of a good product. The fights were reportedly shot in very risky conditions, including one on a shaky hanging bridge and a scene where Aishwarya and Vikram climb up a waterfall. That is the kind of stuff we get to see on AXN. It is really going to be a thrilling experience.

At a run time of reportedly just above 2 hours, Raavanan will be exciting, emotional and gripping journey which will look to interpret one of the most revered Indian myths. This one has definitely got all the makings of a milestone in Indian cinema. Be sure to be there!

SIMBUS ANSWERS IN MEDIA JUNE 2010

Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya in which Simbhu and Trisha are in the lead roles is gearing up for release. This film has been directed by Gowtham Menon. After this Simbhu has got the opportunity to act in Manirathnam’s film. In an interview to the media, he said:

It seems you are not acting in Ko?

I have to change my appearance for this film. This will take some time. Because of this I was not able to act in this film. For the first time I am acting in the film Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya directed by Gowtham Menon. I use to like all his films.

This film is also very stylish. I have donned the role of an assistant director. Now days I am acting in films that have good story. I will continue to select good stories. You can see Simbhu now in a different dimension.

What happened to direction?

For time being I am giving importance to acting alone. After some time I will decide about directing.

The way you were illustrated in the film Tamizh Padam?

Not disturbed about it.

About your image?

As far as I am concerned I am honest person and I am not worried about image.

Did Nayanthara wish you on your birthday?

When I am not worried about this, why should you worry about it?

Will you come to politics?

I will not come to politics now. I don’t have the thought now. After coming to good level in cinema I will consider about it. I think we can do lot of service while you are acting itself.

SOMETHING ABOUT AJITH'S NEXT FILM BY GAUTHAM MENON

Gautham Vasudev Menon is now a sensational news maker. There was news that he called the Chief Minister by name and he is disappointed with Ajith. Gowtham’s diary is full with Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya remake in Hindi and Kannada, a Malayalam film with Mohanlal, Ajith’s 50thand 51st films and a film with Surya. He also finished the video of the theme song for the World Tamil Classical Conference written by Kalaignar Karunanidhi.

In a brief interview, he spoke about the allegations against him.

There are lots of buzzes because you called the Chief Minister by his name during the launch of World Tamil Classical Conference theme song?

I would request to see the function’s video recording. I started the speech by saying Honorable Chief Minister Thiru M Karunanidhi. When I continued to speak I said we used to call the artist as one take artist if he completes the shot in a single take and when I said that Kalaignar is also a one take artist, Kalaignar himself laughed. Afterwards people told me that nobody calls him by name.

But I am happy whenever I call him Karunanidhi. I will call him in all the forums by this name. This only was twisted and written that I have called the Chief Minister by name. Many are commenting that why a Malayalee is directing this video. My father is a Malayalee and mother is a Tamilian. If I go to Mumbai, they are saying that I am South Indian.

If I go to Kerala, they say that I am a Tamilian and ask me that why I have come there to make a Malayalam film. Can I go and tell them that my mother is a Tamilian and my father is a Malayalee. My father christened my name as Gowtham Vasudev Menon. My first producer said that Menon is not necessary and Gowtham is sufficient. Since I was under his control I was not able to put my full name in the title card.

After my father died and when I started producing my first film Vaaranam Aayiram I used my full name and in future I will also be using my full name. There is no need to explain about this to anyone.

There was news that you have told,” I am only telling that I am going to direct Ajith’s film but there is no response from Ajith’s side”?

How can I deny what I have spoken But how can I deny the words which I have not spoken. I have not mentioned anything about Ajith. After I met Ajith in connection with the film, there were such rumors after four days. Ajith told me that we commence the film after completing the races. The producer of this film is already busy with another two films currently. When both of them come together and fix the date, I will be ready for shooting.

Will you be joining with Harris once again?

Who said that I will not work with Harris? He had only mentioned that he will not work with me. Apart from work, we are still in connection and speak about lot of things. But Ajith’s film and Hindi remake of Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya will have the music of A R Rahman

VIJAYS NEXT MOVE ABOUT KAVALKARAN

Vijay was the only person shocked after seeing that the trailer of his film Sura was lifted after the 13th day of the release of the film. Sura’s trailer was replaced by Singam trailer.

The film was taken out of the theatres on the 25th day of its release. Vijay who had the knack of making his film run for 100 days in spite of its failures was not able to do this time, though he held the Chennai city rights.

Hence, Vijay has purchased the film Kavalkaran outright. The reason for this that he didn’t want the Sun Pictures to acquire the rights and the second thing is that he wanted to set right the losses incurred by the distributors by releasing Sura. He has planned to act in a film and give the distributors at a low price

ALLU ARJUN IN TAMIL FILMS

Allu Arjun said that he wants to act in Tamil films. While speaking about this he said,” The film Vedham which I had acted in Telugu is being released on 4th of this month. The films I have acted have good response in Karnataka and Kerala.

So far I have not concentrated in Tamil films. These days a hero should expand his boundaries to other States also. It has become a necessity. So I have decided to listen to stories of film which is to be made in Tamil and Telugu.

I also want to shine as hero in Tamil films. Many are telling that if film are made in Telugu and Tamil, the budget will become more. I believe that there will be profit if the films are released in both the languages.
